Veddah Village Tour in Sri Lanka
Overview
The Veddha (also spelled Vedda) are Sri Lanka's original inhabitants, predating the arrival of the Sinhalese and Tamil peoples by millennia. With an ancestral lineage dating back over 16,000 years, they represent one of the oldest continuously surviving cultures in Asia. Today, only around 2,000 Veddhas remain, and fewer than a few hundred still practise elements of their ancient forest lifestyle — hunting with bows and arrows, gathering wild honey, and communing with ancestral spirits through ritual song and dance. This 9-day cultural immersion takes you into two distinct Veddha communities: the Dambana Vedda Village in Mahiyanganaya, led by the hereditary chief Uruwarige Wannila Aththo, and the lesser-known Gal Oya Veddhas, who sheltered in cave dwellings along the shores of Senanayake Samudra reservoir. The journey is woven together with visits to Kandy's sacred temple, the dramatic waterfalls of the Rathna Ella valley, a jeep safari through Gal Oya National Park (where you can observe elephants from a boat on the reservoir), and time in the surf-village of Weligama on the southern coast — offering a vivid contrast between Sri Lanka's oldest and most contemporary ways of life.
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Arrival in Colombo
Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport and be greeted by your driver for a comfortable transfer to your hotel in Colombo. Spend the evening exploring the city's colonial Pettah bazaar district or the waterfront at Galle Face Green. Overnight stay in Colombo.
Day 2Colombo to Kandy
After breakfast, drive northeast through the hill country foothills to Kandy, the last royal capital of the Kandyan Kingdom and a UNESCO World Heritage City. Check into your hotel before attending the evening puja ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) — the most sacred Buddhist shrine in Sri Lanka, said to enshrine a tooth relic of the Gautama Buddha. The ceremony, accompanied by traditional drumming and the fragrance of incense, is profoundly moving. In the evening, enjoy a Kandyan cultural dance performance showcasing the island's classical dance traditions. Overnight stay in Kandy.
Day 3Kandy to Mahiyanganaya
Depart for Mahiyanganaya — a small, historically significant town in the Uva Province regarded as one of the oldest settlements in Sri Lanka, traditionally associated with the Buddha's first visit to the island. On arrival, immerse yourself in village life: learn the art of traditional clay pot making (a skill passed down through generations of local craftspeople), and observe the intricate technique of 'pan' weaving — creating traditional mats and baskets from dried pandanus leaves. Enjoy an authentic rice and curry lunch at Rathna Ella Village. In the afternoon, trek through the surrounding jungle to the Rathna Ella waterfall (111 m) and the adjacent Kaluwa Wetuna Ella, two of the most spectacular and least-visited falls in Sri Lanka. Overnight stay in Mahiyanganaya.
Day 4Dambana Veddha Village Full Day
Today is the centrepiece of the journey — a full-day cultural immersion with the Dambana Veddha community, approximately 6 km from Mahiyanganaya. The community is led by hereditary chief Uruwarige Wannila Aththo, a passionate advocate for indigenous rights whose family has led the Dambana Veddhas for generations. Accompany Veddha guides on a bush walk through their ancestral forest, learning to identify edible and medicinal plants and understand their cosmological relationship with the natural world. Witness traditional hunting techniques — including the use of bows fashioned from ironwood — and visit cave dwellings that sheltered Veddha communities for millennia. As evening falls, gather around a fire for a BBQ dinner of jungle meats and tubers accompanied by Veddha ritual songs and dances performed to honour their ancestral spirits (nae yakku). Overnight stay in Mahiyanganaya.
Day 5Mahiyanganaya to Gal Oya National Park
Drive east to Gal Oya National Park — Sri Lanka's most remote and least-visited national park, encompassing 25,900 hectares of dry-zone jungle, grassland, and the vast Senanayake Samudra reservoir. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the park's forested fringes, then board a small boat on the reservoir for an afternoon safari — the only boat safari available in a Sri Lankan national park. This unique experience allows you to glide silently among herds of elephants as they swim between islands during the dry season, alongside water birds, mugger crocodiles, and occasionally fishing eagles. Return to your lodge for dinner. Overnight stay at Gal Oya.
Day 6Gal Oya Veddha Tribe Experience
Today you visit the Gal Oya Veddhas — a distinct community from those in Dambana, who historically sheltered in cave systems along the rocky outcrops flanking the Senanayake Samudra. Accompanied by a Veddha guide, explore the ancestral caves etched with ancient rock paintings, walk through their traditional hunting grounds in the dry zone jungle (a different ecosystem to the rainforest-dwelling Dambana community), and hear elders recount oral histories, folk tales, and creation myths passed down across hundreds of generations. This intimate encounter with a community that stands at the very edge of cultural survival is a privilege rarely offered to visitors. Return to Gal Oya Lodge for the afternoon and evening. Overnight stay at Gal Oya.
Day 7Gal Oya to Ella
Begin the day with an early morning boat safari on the reservoir — the cool morning light and calm water offer spectacular conditions for wildlife photography. After breakfast, drive west through the scenic highland passes to the village of Ella, a backpacker's haven perched on a ridge at 1,041 m. In the afternoon, join a cooking class at a local home — learning to prepare an authentic Sri Lankan rice and curry with fresh-ground spice pastes and coconut milk, alongside chutneys, sambols, and papadums. Enjoy your own creation for dinner. Overnight stay in Ella.
Day 8Ella to Weligama
Start the morning with a hike to Little Adam's Peak (1,141 m) for panoramic dawn views across the Ella Gap. Descend and visit the iconic Nine Arches Bridge — a remarkable 91 m span of colonial-era brickwork viaduct — before driving southwest to Weligama, a fishing and surf village on Sri Lanka's southern coast. Arrive in the late afternoon and check into your beachside accommodation. Spend the evening at leisure on the golden sands of Weligama Bay, or dine at one of the excellent fresh-seafood restaurants along the waterfront while watching traditional stilt fishermen at work. Overnight stay in Weligama.
Day 9Departure from Weligama
After a final breakfast by the beach, transfer north to Bandaranaike International Airport — approximately 3.5 hours along the Southern Expressway. Bid farewell to Sri Lanka carrying the rare memory of time spent with the Veddha people, one of Asia's oldest living cultures.
