Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Arrival in Colombo
Welcome to Sri Lanka! Your driver will greet you at Bandaranaike International Airport and transfer you to your hotel in Colombo. Spend the evening on a leisurely orientation walk through the Galle Face waterfront promenade, soaking in the ocean breeze and street food stalls before your first night on the island.
Day 2Colombo to Sigiriya
After breakfast, drive north into the Cultural Triangle. En route, stop at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage — home to one of the world's largest herds of captive elephants — where you can watch them bathe and feed in the Maha Oya River. Continue to Sigiriya and check in to your hotel. Spend the afternoon at leisure, perhaps exploring the surrounding rice paddies and village lanes.
Day 3Sigiriya Rock & Dambulla Cave Temple
Rise early for the iconic ascent of Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Climb the 1,200-step ancient citadel built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century, passing the famous frescoes of celestial maidens and the enormous Lion Paws gateway. The summit reveals sweeping views of jungle and reservoirs. In the afternoon, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO-listed complex of five cave shrines adorned with over 150 Buddha statues and vivid ceiling murals spanning 2,100 years of history.
Day 4Sigiriya to Kandy
Drive south to the hill capital of Kandy, stopping en route at a spice and herbal garden in Matale to discover Sri Lanka's cinnamon, pepper, and cardamom heritage. In Kandy, visit the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which houses a tooth of the Buddha and remains the spiritual heart of the island. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Kandyan dance and fire-walking performance — a spectacular display of drums, masks, and acrobatics.
Day 5Kandy to Nuwara Eliya
Begin the morning at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, home to over 4,000 species of plants, a stunning orchid house, and an avenue of royal palms. Then wind upward through misty mountains and manicured tea estates into Nuwara Eliya — dubbed 'Little England' for its colonial bungalows, rose gardens, and cool highland air. Visit a working tea factory to see how Ceylon Tea is made, from leaf to cup, and enjoy a tasting session.
Day 6Nuwara Eliya to Ella by Train
Board one of the world's most celebrated rail journeys from Nanu Oya station. The slow, scenic train winds through cloud forest, tea estates, and tunnel bridges, crossing the famous Nine Arch Bridge near Ella — a masterpiece of colonial-era engineering draped in jungle foliage. Arrive in Ella by mid-afternoon and settle into your hillside guesthouse, with the green Ella Gap valley stretching below.
Day 7Ella Exploration
Spend the morning on a hike to Little Adam's Peak, a gentle two-hour trail through tea gardens offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. In the afternoon, visit the cascading Ravana Falls — one of Sri Lanka's widest waterfalls and linked to the legendary Ramayana epic. The remainder of the afternoon is yours to explore Ella's vibrant café scene and artisan shops.
Day 8Ella to Yala National Park
Drive through the southern highlands and down into the dry zone. Check in to your jungle lodge and head out for an afternoon jeep safari in Yala National Park — Sri Lanka's most famous wildlife reserve and home to the highest density of leopards in the world. With luck, you'll spot leopards resting in trees, herds of wild elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species in the scrub jungle and coastal lagoons.
Day 9Yala to Galle
After an optional early morning game drive, head west along Sri Lanka's dramatic southern coast. Arrive at Galle — the island's finest colonial city — and explore the UNESCO-listed Dutch Fort on foot. Wander the ramparts, visit the 17th-century Dutch Reformed Church, browse boutique galleries and spice shops within the fort walls, and find a perch on the ocean-side ramparts to watch the sun sink into the Indian Ocean.
Day 10Galle to Bandaranaike International Airport
Enjoy a leisurely final morning in Galle — perhaps a dawn walk along the fort walls or a last coffee in one of the fort's charming cafés. Your driver will then transfer you northward along the expressway to Bandaranaike International Airport for your departure flight.
