Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Arrival & Munneswaram Temple
Airport pickup and transfer north to Chilaw, home to two of the Ramayana trail's most important sites. Visit the ancient Munneswaram Kovil — one of Sri Lanka's five Ishwarams (sacred Shiva temples), said to be where Lord Rama prayed for absolution after killing Ravana. Continue to the nearby Manavari Temple in Chilaw, the smallest of the Ishwarams and closely linked to Rama's victory. Transfer to Colombo for the night.
Day 2Panchamukhi Anjaneyar Temple & Cultural Triangle
Visit the magnificent Panchamukhi Anjaneyar Temple in Colombo — dedicated to the five-faced form of Lord Hanuman — before driving north into the Cultural Triangle. The ancient city of Anuradhapura, with its 2,300-year-old sacred Bodhi Tree grown from a sapling of the original tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, carries deep spiritual resonance on this pilgrimage route. Continue to Sigiriya.
Day 3Dambulla Cave Temple & Ashoka Vatika
Begin at Dambulla Cave Temple — the finest cave temple in Sri Lanka, its walls covered with centuries of sacred murals. According to Ramayana legend, the gardens near Sigiriya correspond to the Ashoka Vatika where King Ravana held Sita captive. The gentle hills, rock overhangs, and ancient trees around this landscape are intimately linked to the epic's Sri Lankan chapters.
Day 4Kandy — Temple of the Tooth & Kataragama Devalaya
Drive to Kandy. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — the holiest Buddhist site in Sri Lanka — and the adjacent Kataragama Devalaya shrine, dedicated to the warrior god Skanda who is venerated by Hindus, Buddhists, and Veddhas alike. The multi-faith character of Kandy's sacred precinct reflects the layered spiritual heritage of this ancient kingdom.
Day 5Seetha Amman Temple & Divurumpola
Drive into the misty highlands near Nuwara Eliya to visit Seetha Amman Temple in Seetha Eliya — the precise location, according to legend, where Ravana held Princess Sita captive in the Ashoka grove. The footprints of Ravana's Dandu Monara flying vessel are said to be visible in the rock face nearby. Continue to Divurumpola Temple, the legendary site of Sita's 'Agni Pariksha' (trial by fire), where she proved her purity before Rama.
Day 6Ravana's Kingdom — Falls, Cave & Ella Temples
Descend into Ella, the landscape most closely associated with King Ravana's legendary kingdom. Visit the dramatic Ravana Falls — named after the demon king — and explore Ravana Cave in the hillside above, where Ravana is said to have meditated. Nearby temples and rock shrines pay homage to this complex figure who, despite being the antagonist of the epic, is revered in Sri Lanka as a great king and healer.
Day 7Kataragama — Sacred Pilgrimage Site
Journey to Kataragama — one of Sri Lanka's most powerful and sacred pilgrimage sites, venerated by Hindus, Buddhists, and Muslims alike. The Maha Devale temple complex, set beside the Menik Ganga river, pulses with devotion and ritual throughout the day. Witness the evening puja ceremony — a thunderous, incense-wreathed ritual of drumming, torch-lit processions, and offerings — one of the most spiritually charged experiences in all of Sri Lanka.
Day 8Departure
Transfer from the south coast northward along the expressway to Bandaranaike International Airport for your departure flight, carrying the memories of an extraordinary spiritual journey through the living landscape of the Ramayana.
