Packing Guide

What to Bring

Sri Lanka's tropical climate, diverse terrain, and cultural customs mean thoughtful packing pays dividends. This guide covers everything from beach days to highland hikes and temple visits — with the reasoning behind each recommendation.

01

Clothing

Lightweight cotton or linen clothing

Sri Lanka is tropical — breathable natural fabrics are far more comfortable than synthetics.

Modest attire for temples

Shoulders and knees must be covered when visiting religious sites. A sarong or light scarf is ideal.

Warm layer for the Hill Country

Nuwara Eliya and Ella can dip to 10°C at night — a light fleece or jacket is essential.

Comfortable walking sandals & closed shoes

Sandals for beach and temples (easy to remove); closed shoes for hikes and nature walks.

Rain jacket or compact umbrella

Showers can arrive quickly, especially in the south-west and highlands.

02

Health & Protection

High-SPF sunscreen (SPF 50+)

The equatorial sun is intense. Reapply frequently, especially near water.

Insect repellent (DEET-based)

Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk. Essential for jungle and wildlife areas.

Personal medications & prescriptions

Bring adequate supply. While pharmacies are widely available, specialist medications may not be stocked.

Basic first-aid kit

Antiseptic wipes, plasters, rehydration sachets, and antihistamines cover most minor issues.

Hand sanitiser & water purification tablets

Tap water is not safe to drink. Stick to bottled or filtered water at all times.

03

Essentials & Electronics

Universal power adapter (Type D / G)

Sri Lanka uses Type D (round 3-pin) and Type G (UK-style) sockets. A universal adapter covers both.

Reusable water bottle

Reducing plastic waste is encouraged. Many hotels provide filtered water refill stations.

Portable power bank

Useful for full-day excursions when access to charging points may be limited.

Camera & memory cards

Sri Lanka is extraordinarily photogenic. Bring ample storage and a lens cloth for humidity.

Photocopies of important documents

Keep physical copies of your passport, ETA, travel insurance, and emergency contacts separately.

Pro Tip

Travelling light pays off in Sri Lanka. Good-quality laundry services are available at most hotels and guesthouses for a very low cost — often overnight. You can comfortably manage two weeks with a single carry-on bag and a small daypack.
