What every traveller should know

Is Sri Lanka Safe?

Travel Safety

A Safe and Welcoming Destination

Sri Lanka is widely regarded as one of South Asia's safest and most visitor-friendly destinations. The island's people are renowned for their warmth and hospitality, and serious crime against tourists is uncommon. As with any international journey, a degree of awareness and preparation ensures a smooth, enjoyable experience.

Current Status

Sri Lanka is open and actively welcoming international visitors. The tourism sector is thriving and the government has invested significantly in ensuring a safe and positive experience for all foreign guests. We recommend checking your home country's travel advisory for the most current official guidance before departure.

Practical Advice

Staying Safe on the Island

01

Safeguard Your Valuables

Petty theft can occur in busy tourist areas, markets, and on public transport. Use a money belt for cash and travel documents. Leave valuables in your hotel safe when not needed.

02

Use Reputable Transport

Book transfers through your hotel or a trusted tour operator, and use apps like PickMe for tuk-tuks. Avoid unmarked taxis, especially at night or at airports.

03

Respect Religious Customs

Sri Lanka is home to Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Christian communities. Dress modestly at places of worship, remove shoes when asked, and never turn your back to a Buddha statue for photos.

04

Be Cautious at the Beach

Rip currents are a real hazard on the west and south coasts. Swim only at patrolled beaches and heed flag warnings. Avoid swimming after dark or in unfamiliar waters.

05

Food & Water Safety

Drink only bottled or filtered water — tap water is not safe to drink. Be selective with street food; choose busy stalls where food is freshly prepared. Carry rehydration sachets.

06

Wildlife Awareness

Wild elephants, monkeys, and other animals are encountered outside of parks too. Maintain a safe distance, never feed wild animals, and follow your guide's instructions on safari.
