Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

Day 1Anuradhapura — Ancient Sacred City

Airport pickup and direct drive to Anuradhapura — Sri Lanka's first UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Explore the vast ancient city: the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi Tree (the oldest documented living tree on earth, grown from a sapling of the Bodhi Tree in India), the massive Ruwanwelisaya Dagoba, the royal pleasure gardens, and the extraordinary stone engineering of this 3rd-century BCE civilization.

Overnight in Anuradhapura

Day 2Polonnaruwa — Medieval Capital

Drive to Polonnaruwa — the medieval capital of Sri Lanka (UNESCO Site #2) and arguably the finest collection of ancient ruins in Asia. Explore by bicycle or jeep: the Council Chamber, the Royal Palace of King Parakramabahu I, the Lankathilaka image house, and the crown jewel — Gal Vihara, where four colossal Buddha figures are carved directly from a single granite face with extraordinary artistry.

Overnight in Polonnaruwa

Day 3Sigiriya & Dambulla — Two UNESCO Sites

An ambitious and rewarding day covering two UNESCO sites. Begin with the legendary Sigiriya Rock Fortress (UNESCO Site #3) — the 5th-century palace citadel of King Kashyapa, with its ancient frescoes, Mirror Wall, and breathtaking summit ruins. In the afternoon, visit Dambulla Cave Temple (UNESCO Site #4) — five cave temples containing over 150 Buddha statues, royal portraits, and painted ceilings spanning 22 centuries of devotional art.

Overnight in Sigiriya

Day 4Sacred Kandy — Temple of the Tooth

Drive to Kandy — the sacred city and last royal capital (UNESCO Site #5). The highlight is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which has housed a tooth of the Buddha since the 4th century CE and remains the spiritual epicentre of Theravada Buddhism. The entire city of Kandy is the designated UNESCO site, encompassing the lake, the temple precincts, and the surrounding cultural landscape.

Day 5Central Highlands — World's End

An early start for the drive to Horton Plains National Park — part of the Central Highlands UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site (#6). Trek the 9km loop trail to World's End, a dramatic escarpment with a near-vertical 870m drop into the lowland jungle, and Baker's Falls, a beautiful 20m waterfall surrounded by endemic montane vegetation. The Central Highlands UNESCO site encompasses the Horton Plains, Peak Wilderness, and Knuckles range.

Overnight in Nuwara Eliya

Day 6Sinharaja Rainforest — Natural World Heritage

Drive to Sinharaja Forest Reserve (UNESCO Natural Heritage Site #7) — Sri Lanka's last large primary lowland rainforest, covering 11,000 hectares of the wet zone. A guided trek through this extraordinary ecosystem reveals ancient hardwood trees, mixed-species bird flocks, endemic reptiles, and the extraordinary density of Sri Lanka's endemic species — 95% of endemic birds are found here. An experienced local guide is essential and provided.

Overnight in Sinharaja

Day 7Galle Fort — Colonial Heritage

Drive to Galle Fort (UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site #8) — the finest example of a fortified European city in South and Southeast Asia, built by the Dutch in the 17th century on earlier Portuguese foundations. Explore the ramparts, the 1755 Dutch Reformed Church, the old Dutch Governor's House, the lighthouse, and the extraordinarily preserved street grid within. Stay overnight inside the fort walls at a heritage boutique hotel.
