Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Arrival & Colombo
Airport transfer to Colombo for an evening briefing with your naturalist guide on what to expect across the days ahead. Sri Lanka's remarkable biodiversity — more leopards per square kilometre than almost anywhere on earth, the world's largest animal (the blue whale) in accessible coastal waters, and over 430 bird species — makes this island one of the most rewarding wildlife destinations on the planet.
Day 2Wilpattu National Park
Drive north to Wilpattu — Sri Lanka's largest national park and perhaps its most wild and atmospheric. Famous for its 'willus' (natural lakes), Wilpattu's dense dry-zone jungle and open grasslands support a healthy population of leopards, sloth bears, elephants, sambar deer, and the elusive fishing cat. A full-day jeep safari with your expert naturalist maximises your chances of big cat sightings.
Day 3Drive to Minneriya — Elephant Gathering
Transfer to the Cultural Triangle. In the late afternoon and evening — when the gathering is most dramatic — head out for a jeep safari at Minneriya National Park. Between July and October, hundreds of wild elephants converge on the ancient Minneriya reservoir as it recedes, creating one of Asia's greatest wildlife spectacles. Even outside peak season, elephant sightings here are reliable and impressive.
Day 4Kaudulla National Park & Sigiriya
Morning ascent of Sigiriya Rock Fortress for cultural context — the surrounding dry zone forests are an important wildlife corridor. In the afternoon, safari at Kaudulla National Park — a sister park to Minneriya, sharing the same elephant population. Kaudulla's waterways also attract painted storks, open-billed storks, and large concentrations of waterfowl.
Day 5Knuckles Range — Endemic Species
Transfer to the Knuckles Mountain Range, a UNESCO-listed wilderness regarded as one of Sri Lanka's most important biodiversity hotspots. Trek through cloud forest with your naturalist guide, tracking endemic species: the purple-faced langur, slender loris, Sri Lanka giant squirrel, and a stunning array of endemic birds including the Sri Lanka blue magpie, Layard's parakeet, and Sri Lanka wood pigeon.
Day 6Sinharaja Rainforest
A full day in Sinharaja — Sri Lanka's last primary lowland rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This dense jungle harbours the highest concentration of endemic species on the island: 95% of endemic birds, 50% of endemic mammals, and extraordinary reptiles and amphibians. Walk with your guide through the forest, following mixed-species bird flocks and listening for the calls of endemic frogs and insects in the understorey.
Day 7Udawalawe — Wild Elephant Herds
Drive to Udawalawe National Park, located around the Udawalawe Reservoir. This is the finest park in Sri Lanka for reliable, close-up elephant encounters — over 500 wild elephants roam the open grasslands, frequently visible in large breeding herds. An afternoon jeep safari typically yields multiple elephant encounters, alongside water buffalo, mongoose, crocodile, and a variety of raptors.
Day 8Yala — Leopard Safari
The highlight for many: a full-day safari in Yala National Park, home to the world's highest density of wild leopards. Sri Lanka's leopards are also among the largest of the subspecies, and Yala's open scrub jungle makes sightings more frequent than almost anywhere else on earth. Your naturalist guide knows the best territories and seasonal patterns, giving you the best possible chance of multiple leopard sightings.
Day 9Mirissa — Blue Whale Watching
Before dawn, transfer to Mirissa Harbour and board a whale watching vessel for the deep waters of the continental shelf. Mirissa is considered one of the best places on Earth to see blue whales (the largest animal ever to exist on this planet) and sperm whales, along with spinner dolphins, flying fish, and sea turtles. Return by late morning and spend the afternoon relaxing on Mirissa beach.
Day 10Departure
A final morning at leisure on the south coast before your driver transfers you northward to Bandaranaike International Airport — 9 days and some of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters anywhere in Asia.
