Overview

Sri Lanka is one of the few places on earth where you can encounter both land and marine wildlife in such striking diversity, all within a compact, accessible island. Often referred to as the best place outside Africa to witness the 'Big Five,' the island offers a rare chance to see elephants, leopards, sloth bears, blue whales, and sperm whales — all on one extraordinary tour.

Tour Highlights

Sigiriya Rock Fortress and cultural immersion
Dambulla Cave Temple and loris night walk
Wasgamuwa National Park — elephants and water buffalo

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

Day 1Arrival in Wilpattu

Upon arrival at BIA, your driver greets you and transfers directly to Wilpattu in the north-west — Sri Lanka's largest national park. Check in to your lodge near the park entrance and allow the time zone adjustment with a restful evening, briefed by your naturalist on the extraordinary wildlife encounters ahead.

Overnight in Wilpattu

Day 2Wilpattu Full-Day Safari

A full-day jeep safari in Wilpattu National Park — Sri Lanka's largest and oldest park, famous for its 'willus' (natural sand-rimmed lakes) and excellent leopard population. Wilpattu also supports sloth bears, elephants, crocodiles, spotted deer, and a stunning variety of water birds. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a lakeside clearing deep inside the park.

Overnight in Wilpattu

Day 3Wilpattu to Sigiriya — Rock Fortress & Foot Massage

Transfer to Sigiriya, the ancient rock fortress rising dramatically from the jungle floor. Explore the 5th-century citadel with its remarkable frescoes, landscaped water gardens, and summit palace ruins. As the sun sets over the surrounding jungle and reservoirs, unwind with a soothing herbal foot massage at your lodge — the perfect end to an extraordinary day.

Overnight in Sigiriya
4

Day 4Dambulla Cave Temple & Loris Night Walk

Morning visit to the Dambulla Cave Temple — five interconnected cave shrines filled with painted ceilings and 153 Buddha statues spanning 22 centuries of devotion. An afternoon catamaran ride across the Kandalama lake offers views of the Rock Fortress and opportunities to interact with local villagers and learn to prepare traditional Sri Lankan curry. After dinner, embark on a guided loris night walk — the slender loris is nocturnal and these walks are remarkably productive.

Overnight in Sigiriya
5

Day 5Polonnaruwa by Bicycle & Wasgamuwa

Transfer to Polonnaruwa and explore the magnificent medieval ruins by bicycle — the finest way to cover this expansive UNESCO site. The Gal Vihara rock-cut Buddhas, the Royal Palace, and the ancient dagobas reward an unhurried exploration. Continue to Wasgamuwa National Park for an evening check-in — a remote and rarely visited park with exceptional wildlife.

Overnight in Wasgamuwa
6

Day 6Wasgamuwa Morning Safari

An early-morning jeep safari in Wasgamuwa National Park — one of Sri Lanka's least-visited yet most rewarding parks. The park's dense riverine forests and open grasslands shelter majestic Sri Lankan elephants, water buffalo, spotted and barking deer, and wild boar. The Mahaweli River forms the park's western boundary and its banks are excellent for crocodile and water bird sightings.

Overnight in Wasgamuwa
7

Day 7Wasgamuwa to Nuwara Eliya

Transfer into the cool highland climate of Nuwara Eliya, passing through a landscape of tea estates, waterfalls, and mountain villages. An evening city tour covering the tea plantation, tea factory, old post office, Victoria Park, and the scenic Gregory Lake — where you can spot highland bird species including the Sri Lanka wood pigeon and Indian blue robin.

Overnight in Nuwara Eliya
8

Day 8Horton Plains Trek

An early morning drive to Horton Plains National Park for a trek to World's End — a sheer 870m escarpment above the southern lowland jungle. The trek through the wind-swept plateau reveals endemic highland flora and fauna: sambar deer, endemic birds including the Sri Lanka whistling thrush and Sri Lanka bush warbler, and the extraordinary Baker's Falls. Return to Nuwara Eliya for the evening.

Overnight in Nuwara Eliya
9

Day 9Nuwara Eliya to Gal Oya

Transfer east to the remote and pristine Gal Oya National Park — built around Sri Lanka's largest reservoir. An afternoon jungle drive through the park introduces the landscape of Gal Oya: dense dry monsoon forest, ancient tanks, and vast open water. A magical evening stroll at the lodge's forest edge reveals nocturnal wildlife and a spectacular starfield above the jungle.

Overnight in Gal Oya
10

Day 10Gal Oya — Boat Safari & Elephant Monitoring

The highlight of Gal Oya: a morning boat safari on the Senanayake Samudra reservoir — Sri Lanka's largest. With luck, you will witness wild elephants swimming between the lake's islands, a sight found nowhere else in Asia. In the afternoon, explore the surrounding villages by bicycle and observe daily local life. In the late evening, participate in an animal monitoring project with a resident naturalist.

Overnight in Gal Oya
11

Day 11Gal Oya to Kumana

An early morning drift through Kiri Oruwa Lake, watching for endemic and migratory birds in the dense reed beds and waterside forest. Transfer southeast to Kumana National Park — a hidden gem in Sri Lanka's south-east corner, less visited than Yala but equally wildlife-rich. Check in to your remote lodge at the edge of the wilderness.

Overnight in Kumana
12

Day 12Kumana Full-Day Safari

A full-day jeep safari in Kumana National Park — renowned as one of Asia's finest waterbird breeding grounds, with massive nesting colonies of painted storks, night herons, and egrets at the Kumana Villu (lake). The park is also home to leopards, elephants, deer, crocodiles, and water buffalo, all in a pristine and uncrowded wilderness setting that feels genuinely remote.

Overnight in Kumana
13

Day 13Kumana to Mirissa

Transfer west along the south coast to Mirissa — the final and most celebratory destination of the tour. Arrive in the late afternoon and spend the evening at Coconut Tree Hill — a beautiful headland overlooking Mirissa Bay — watching the sunset paint the Indian Ocean in shades of gold and pink.

Overnight in Mirissa
14

Day 14Blue Whale Watching

The grand finale: an early-morning departure from Mirissa Harbour aboard a whale-watching vessel, heading out to the deep-water continental shelf where blue whales — the largest animals ever to exist on Earth — surface to breathe. Sri Lanka's southern waters are among the most reliable on the planet for blue whale sightings, alongside sperm whales, spinner dolphins, and sea turtles.

Overnight in Mirissa
15

Day 15Departure from Colombo

Transfer northward to Bandaranaike International Airport for your departure flight — 14 extraordinary days in one of Asia's finest wildlife destinations, having witnessed the full spectrum of Sri Lanka's remarkable natural world.
