Feathered Trails of Ceylon
Overview
Sri Lanka is one of Asia's premier bird-watching destinations, with over 430 species including 33 endemics found nowhere else on earth. This 15-day itinerary covers the island's best bird-watching hotspots — from the mangroves of Mannar (famous for flamingo flocks) and the dry-zone forests of Wilpattu to Kitulgala's endemic rainforest species and Sinharaja's mixed-species bird flocks.
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Arrival in Wilpattu
Airport pickup and transfer to Wilpattu — your first bird-watching destination. Sri Lanka's largest national park is home to a remarkable variety of resident and migratory birds, with its 'willus' (natural lakes) providing excellent waterbird habitat. A rest after the journey ensures you are fresh for the full-day safari tomorrow.
Day 2Wilpattu Full-Day Bird Safari
A full-day jeep safari in Wilpattu with your specialist bird-watching guide. The park's mix of dry-zone scrub, deciduous forest, grassland, and lakes supports brown fish owl, Malabar pied hornbill, crested serpent eagle, painted stork, Sri Lanka grey hornbill, and many more. The 'willus' attract remarkable concentrations of waterbirds, especially in the early morning hours. Picnic lunch inside the park.
Day 3Wilpattu to Mannar — Coastal Birding
Transfer to Mannar — the northern peninsula that juts into the Palk Strait and is one of the most important birding sites in South Asia. En route, stop at Thiruketheeswaram Tank, Ranapadu Fishing Village Lagoon, and the historic Mannar Fort. The Mannar coastline hosts extraordinary concentrations of migratory waders, waterbirds, and the islands' resident dry-zone species.
Day 4Mannar — Flamingos & Wetland Waders
An early morning departure to spot migratory flamingos and waders at Korakulam Wetland, Mannar Salt Pans, Keeri Beach, and Thallady Junction Ponds. Greater and lesser flamingos, bar-tailed godwits, Kentish plovers, little stints, and painted snipe are among the species regularly recorded here during the migratory season. The light at dawn over the shallow salt pans is extraordinary for photography.
Day 5Mannar to Sigiriya
Transfer south to Sigiriya. Experience the awe-inspiring Sigiriya Rock Fortress at sunset — when the warm light illuminates the rock face and the surrounding forests glow beneath. The Sigiriya sanctuary (scrubland and dry mixed evergreen forest around the rock) is productive for dry-zone bird species including the brown-capped babbler, Malabar trogon, and Indian paradise flycatcher.
Day 6Sigiriya — Sanctuary & Village Birding
Early morning bird-watching at the Sigiriya sanctuary — a scrubland and dry evergreen forest with small tanks that attract a productive mix of resident species. The afternoon brings a scenic catamaran ride on the local lake, a village cooking experience, and a second bird-watching session as the light improves in the late afternoon around the village tanks.
Day 7Sigiriya to Kitulgala — Dambulla & Rafting
Morning visit to the magnificent Dambulla Cave Temple. Transfer to Kitulgala — one of the premier bird-watching sites in Sri Lanka for rainforest endemics. An afternoon white-water rafting session on the Kelani River provides an exciting introduction to this beautiful jungle landscape.
Day 8Kitulgala Rainforest Birding
A dedicated bird-watching morning in the Kitulgala rainforest — prime habitat for some of Sri Lanka's most sought-after endemic species. The Sri Lanka blue magpie, green-billed coucal, Sri Lanka spur fowl, red-faced malkoha, and Layard's parakeet are all regular here. Transfer to Nuwara Eliya, stopping at St. Clair's and Devon Falls. Evening birding along the highland roadsides and Gregory Lake.
Day 9Horton Plains — Highland Endemics
A trek across Horton Plains specifically targeting the high-altitude endemic species found only in Sri Lanka's Central Highlands: the Sri Lanka junglefowl, Sri Lanka wood pigeon, Sri Lanka white-eye, Sri Lanka bush warbler, dull-blue flycatcher, and the yellow-eared bulbul. World's End provides a dramatic backdrop for birding at the cloud-forest edge.
Day 10Nuwara Eliya to Bundala — Ravana Falls Stop
Transfer south to Bundala National Park via a photographic stop at the spectacular Ravana Waterfall. Afternoon jeep safari in Yala National Park, targeting painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, black-necked storks, and raptors. Check in to your Bundala base for the night.
Day 11Bundala National Park — Flamingos & Waders
A dedicated full-day safari in Bundala National Park — Sri Lanka's finest coastal wetland bird-watching site and a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance. Greater flamingos winter here in large flocks, alongside thousands of migratory waders, herons, egrets, spoonbills, and endemic waterbirds. The park's lagoons and thorn scrub also support rare dry-zone species.
Day 12Bundala to Udawalawe — Elephant Transit Home
Transfer to Udawalawe. Morning visit to the Elephant Transit Home — a conservation centre where rescued wild elephant calves are rehabilitated for eventual release back into the wild. Afternoon jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park, targeting waterbirds along the reservoir: lesser adjutant stork, purple heron, woolly-necked stork, and a variety of raptors soaring over the grasslands.
Day 13Transfer to Sinharaja — Night Walk
Transfer to Sinharaja — the most important bird-watching site in Sri Lanka. This UNESCO World Heritage rainforest harbours the greatest concentration of endemic bird species anywhere on the island. Check in to your forest lodge. A leisurely evening night walk through the forest edges introduces the extraordinary nocturnal soundscape of frogs, insects, and owls.
Day 14Sinharaja Full-Day Forest Birding
A dedicated full day of bird-watching in the Sinharaja Rainforest — the finest day's birding available in Sri Lanka. Join the famous mixed-species feeding flocks that move through the forest understorey, reliably producing endemic after endemic: Sri Lanka spurfowl, black-capped bulbul, Sri Lanka blue magpie, Sri Lanka grey hornbill, red-faced malkoha, and the breathtaking Sri Lanka broadbill. A transformative day for any serious birder.
Day 15Departure
Transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport for your departure flight — 14 days of extraordinary bird-watching across Sri Lanka's most diverse habitats, with the island's 33 endemic bird species ticked off the list.
