Tea Tour in Sri Lanka
Overview
Few agricultural landscapes on Earth are as breathtaking as Sri Lanka's tea country — an undulating tapestry of vivid green bushes, colonial bungalows, and mountain mist that stretches across the island's central highlands. The British introduced the Camellia sinensis plant to Ceylon in 1867, and today the island produces some of the world's finest teas, from the brisk high-grown Nuwara Eliya single origins to the rich, full-bodied Dimbula blends. This 13-day immersive tea journey is crafted for both tea connoisseurs and curious travellers. You will pluck your own leaves alongside Tamil tea workers whose families have worked the estates for generations, tour working factory floors where the rolling, fermenting, and firing of the leaf transforms it from garden to cup, sit with trained tea tasters for formal cuppings, visit iconic colonial estates like Loolkandura (one of the world's oldest tea estates), and conclude with a blind tea tasting competition and grand high tea in Colombo. Beyond the estates, the tour weaves in the cultural richness of Kandy, the dramatic waterfalls of the Hatton highlands, the train journey through Ella Gorge, and the sun-bleached ramparts of Galle Fort.
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Arrival in Negombo
Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport and be warmly greeted by your driver. Transfer to your hotel in Negombo, a charming colonial-era fishing town on the west coast just 7 km from the airport. Settle in and unwind after your journey. If time permits, stroll along the beach promenade or explore the town's Dutch-era canal system. Overnight stay in Negombo.
Day 2Negombo to Kandy
After breakfast, depart for Kandy — the cultural capital of Sri Lanka and gateway to the tea highlands. En route, stop at the Royal Botanical Garden of Peradeniya, spread across 147 acres on a loop of the Mahaweli River, renowned for its avenue of royal palms and 4,000-species plant collection. In the late afternoon, visit the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) — the holiest site in Theravada Buddhism and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — for evening puja blessings accompanied by the haunting sound of drums and horns. Overnight stay in Kandy.
Day 3Kandy: Tea Factory & Ambuluwawa
This morning, visit the Orange Tea Factory in the hills above Kandy, where you will tour the full production process — withering, rolling, fermenting, firing, and grading — and enjoy a tasting of freshly produced Kandy mid-grown teas. In the afternoon, ascend to Ambuluwawa Tower — a unique multi-religious complex atop a 1,274 m peak that houses Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Christian shrines side by side, with panoramic views across the central highlands. Return to Kandy for a candlelit dinner at a traditional Sri Lankan restaurant. Overnight stay in Kandy.
Day 4Loolkandura Tea Estate Experience
Journey to the legendary Loolkandura Tea Estate — one of the oldest tea estates in the world, established in 1867 by James Taylor, the Scottish planter credited with founding the Ceylon tea industry. Walk the estate's historic fields with a local guide, try your hand at two-leaves-and-a-bud plucking alongside experienced workers, and tour the beautifully preserved Victorian-era factory. Enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by manicured tea bushes with sweeping highland views. Return to Kandy in the late afternoon for relaxation. Overnight stay in Kandy.
Day 5Kandy to Hatton
Depart Kandy and drive south through the stunning Dimbula tea region to Hatton — the commercial hub of Sri Lanka's high-grown tea country, set at 1,600 m above sea level. The road winds through a continuous carpet of estates with views of Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) on a clear day. Check into your tea estate bungalow or boutique hotel. In the evening, enjoy a specially curated tea-infused dinner featuring dishes prepared with tea as a culinary ingredient — from tea-smoked meats to green tea desserts. Overnight stay in Hatton.
Day 6Hatton Tea Fields Exploration
Spend a full day immersed in the Dimbula tea landscape. Morning guided walks lead you through the sculpted terraces of the surrounding estates, where you can observe the full picking cycle and interact with the Tamil estate community whose ancestors were brought from South India by British planters in the 19th century. In the afternoon, participate in an in-depth tea tasting experience — learning to evaluate liquor colour, aroma, and briskness against the formal tea grading system used by buyers at the Colombo auction. Overnight stay in Hatton.
Day 7Hatton to Nuwara Eliya via Waterfalls
Drive east through the highlands towards Nuwara Eliya (1,868 m), stopping at two of Sri Lanka's most spectacular waterfalls: St. Clair Falls — the 'Niagara of Sri Lanka' — a broad, cascading double waterfall, and Devon Falls, a dramatic 97 m single-tier plunge framed by tea estates. Arrive in Nuwara Eliya — nicknamed 'Little England' for its colonial-era bungalows, manicured hedgerows, golf course, and cool mountain climate. Explore the town's Georgian-era post office, Victoria Park, and the colourful market. Overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya.
Day 8Nuwara Eliya Tea Experience
The highest-grown teas in Sri Lanka — produced above 1,800 m — are prized for their delicate, floral character and golden liquor. Today you will experience their production from field to cup. Join Tamil tea workers for an authentic plucking session on the misty hillside estates above Nuwara Eliya, understanding the skill required to maintain the precise two-leaves-and-a-bud standard. In the afternoon, sit with a trained professional taster for a formal cupping session, learning to identify the characteristics that distinguish Nuwara Eliya's celebrated 'champagne of teas' from other Ceylon grades. Overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya.
Day 9Nuwara Eliya to Ella by Scenic Train
Begin the morning with a visit to the Pedro Tea Estate and Factory — one of the most visited estates in Nuwara Eliya, established in 1885 — for a detailed factory tour. Then board the iconic hill country train at Nanu-Oya station for the breathtaking journey to Ella, widely regarded as one of the world's most scenic rail rides. The narrow-gauge train winds through tea estates, cloud forest, and over dramatic viaducts as it descends from the highlands. Arrive in Ella in the late afternoon. Take a short walk to the iconic Nine Arch Bridge — a masterpiece of British colonial engineering — to watch a train crossing the arches at sunset. Overnight stay in Ella.
Day 10Exploring Ella
Begin the day with a morning hike to Little Adam's Peak (1,141 m) — a relatively easy 45-minute ascent rewarded with sweeping views of the Ella Gap, Ravana Falls, and the surrounding tea-covered hills. Descend and visit a small organic tea farm on the outskirts of Ella village where sustainable, shade-grown tea is produced using traditional methods, for a contrasting small-holder perspective to the large estates visited earlier. Enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry lunch with over a dozen accompaniments — a vivid illustration of the island's culinary heritage. Afternoon at leisure to explore Ella's characterful village strip of cafes and boutiques. Overnight stay in Ella.
Day 11Ella to Galle via Dambatenne
Drive to the Dambatenne Tea Factory in Haputale — built by Sir Thomas Lipton in 1890, this is where the Lipton tea empire was born. Tour the factory and walk to Lipton's Seat (1,970 m) for one of the most famous viewpoints in Sri Lanka, with uninterrupted views across the Uva Basin and its sea of tea. Continue southwest to Galle on the southern coast — a 16th-century fortified city and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Check into your hotel and spend the evening exploring the atmospheric ramparts and colonial streets of Galle Fort. Overnight stay in Galle.
Day 12Galle to Colombo via Handunugoda
Visit the extraordinary Handunugoda Tea Estate near Ahangama — the only producer in the world of 'Virgin White Tea', crafted from leaves that are never touched by human hands during plucking (pickers use scissors and catch falling leaves in baskets). Tour the estate and learn the story behind this remarkable and rare tea. Continue to explore Galle Fort's 36 hectares of cobblestone streets, Dutch colonial warehouses, and coral-stone ramparts before driving north to Colombo. Arrive for a spirited blind tea tasting competition — test everything you have learned across the journey — followed by a sumptuous high tea experience. Overnight stay in Colombo.
Day 13Departure from Colombo
After a final breakfast, transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport for your onward flight. Carry home an intimate knowledge of Ceylon tea — from the ancient estates of Loolkandura to the rare pots of Virgin White — and the memories of one of Asia's most rewarding culinary journeys.
