Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Arrival in Negombo
Arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). Airport pickup and transfer to Negombo, a charming coastal town just minutes from the airport. Check in to your hotel and spend the evening strolling the beach promenade or visiting the colourful fish market beside the Dutch canal.
Day 2Negombo to Dambulla via Henarathgoda Garden
Drive north toward Dambulla, stopping at the historic Henarathgoda Botanical Garden in Gampaha — the place where the first rubber tree in Asia was planted in 1876, sparking the island's rubber industry. The garden contains extraordinary tropical specimens including the famous cannon-ball tree and centuries-old giant bamboo. Continue to Dambulla and visit the UNESCO-listed Cave Temple in the late evening light.
Day 3Dambulla — Sigiriya & Sam Popham's Arboretum
Morning ascent of Sigiriya Rock Fortress for spectacular views and ancient history. In the afternoon, visit Sam Popham's Arboretum — one of Sri Lanka's most remarkable private nature reserves, created by a British tea planter and home to an extraordinary collection of rare dry-zone trees and plants. End the day with a guided night walk through the arboretum's nocturnal wildlife — loris sightings are a genuine possibility.
Day 4Dambulla to Kandy via Menikdena Arboretum
Drive to Kandy, stopping en route at the Menikdena Archaeological Reserve and Arboretum — a unique site combining ancient forest monastery ruins with a preserved dry-zone arboretum. Also stop at Nalanda Gedige — the geographic center point of Sri Lanka, a remarkable fusion-architecture temple straddling Buddhist and Hindu design. Arrive in Kandy and visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic.
Day 5Kandy to Nuwara Eliya via Peradeniya
Begin with a visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya — the finest botanical gardens in South Asia, established in 1821. Cover 147 acres of orchid houses, palm avenues, bamboo groves, giant Java fig trees, and a remarkable collection of tropical and temperate species. Drive upward to Nuwara Eliya, stopping at the Ramboda Waterfall and a working tea plantation and factory along the way.
Day 6Nuwara Eliya — Hakgala Botanical Garden
Explore Nuwara Eliya's charming Little England city with its colonial bungalows and rose gardens. Visit Victoria Park in the morning — a popular urban park with highland birds and seasonal flowers. In the afternoon, walk the beautiful Hakgala Botanical Garden, perched at 1,700m on the slopes of Hakgala Rock and famous for its roses, Japanese garden, tree ferns, and stunning mountain backdrop.
Day 7Scenic Train to Ella
Board the highland railway from Nanu Oya to Ella — a journey through cloud forest, tea plantations, and cascading waterfalls. Arrive in Ella and visit the iconic Nine Arch Bridge. In the evening, enjoy an authentic Sri Lankan culinary experience at a local restaurant — a fitting way to connect with highland culture.
Day 8Ella to Hambantota via Dry Zone Botanic Garden

Transfer to Hambantota on the south coast, stopping at the Dry Zone Botanic Garden in Ethnohabithuduwa near Hambantota — the only dry-zone botanical garden in Sri Lanka, showcasing arid-climate plants, medicinal trees, and endemic dry-zone species in a remarkable landscape of scrub jungle and seasonal wetlands.
Day 9Hambantota to Galle via Mirijjawila & Kottawa
Visit the Mirijjawila Botanical Garden near Hambantota — established on the site of an ancient lagoon ecosystem and dedicated to showcasing Sri Lanka's coastal and dry-zone biodiversity. Transfer to Galle and stop at the Kottawa Arboretum — a 15-hectare protected rainforest fragment within the Galle district, with a well-marked trail through ancient hardwoods, endemic birds, and rare amphibians.
Day 10Galle to Colombo via Brief Garden
Explore the magnificent Galle Dutch Fort in the morning. Transfer to Colombo, stopping at the Brief Garden near Bentota — the romantic private garden of artist and stage designer Bevis Bawa, featuring sculpture, tropical planting, and extraordinary views, open to the public as one of Sri Lanka's finest private garden experiences. In the evening, visit the Dilmah Conservation One Earth Arboretum in Colombo.
Day 11Colombo — Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Garden
Relax at your Colombo hotel in the morning before visiting the Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Gardens in Avissawella — a 52-hectare garden established in 1967 to preserve specimens of Sri Lanka's wet zone flora including medicinal plants, spice collections, and rare endemic trees not found in Peradeniya.
