Overview

Sri Lanka has earned global recognition as a 'green paradise', its landscapes cloaked in lush vegetation from coast to cloud forest. Among its most treasured ecosystems are its tropical rainforests — ancient, biodiverse, and fragile. Covering only a small fraction of the island, these rainforests are home to hundreds of endemic species of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and plants found nowhere else on Earth. This 8-day immersive journey takes you through three of Sri Lanka's most significant rainforest ecosystems: the adventure-rich Kelani Valley forests around Kitulgala, the misty wilderness of the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, the dramatic ridgelines of the Knuckles Mountain Range (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the crown jewel — Sinharaja Biosphere Reserve, the island's last viable tract of primary lowland tropical rainforest. Along the way you will trek beneath towering canopies, go birdwatching for endemic species like the Sri Lanka blue magpie and red-faced malkoha, white-water raft the Kelani River, and sleep in intimate eco-lodges surrounded by the sounds of the forest.

Day 3Kitulgala Rainforest Exploration

Spend a full day immersed in the Kelani Valley rainforest. Begin the morning with a guided birdwatching walk — Kitulgala is renowned as one of the best birding spots in Sri Lanka, home to all six of the island's endemic rainforest birds including the red-faced malkoha, Sri Lanka blue magpie, and ashy-headed laughingthrush. In the afternoon, experience the thrill of white-water rafting on the Kelani River (Grade 2–3 rapids), before visiting the riverside filming locations of David Lean's Oscar-winning film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. Optional waterfall trekking to the Doowa Waterfalls is available in the late afternoon. Overnight stay in Kitulgala.

Day 4Kitulgala to Peak Wilderness Sanctuary

After breakfast, depart for the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary (Sri Pada Wildlife Reserve), one of Sri Lanka's most pristine and least-visited rainforest ecosystems. Stretching across 224 sq km of montane rainforest, it forms a critical biodiversity corridor between Sinharaja and Horton Plains. Check into your accommodation at the forest edge, then set out on an afternoon trek into the sanctuary's lower trails. The forest is rich in epiphytes, giant ferns, and endemic wildlife — keep an eye out for purple-faced langurs, giant squirrels, and rare forest lizards. Overnight stay in Peak Wilderness Sanctuary.

Day 5Peak Wilderness to Knuckles Mountain Range

After breakfast, drive north to the Knuckles Mountain Range (Dumbara Hills), a UNESCO World Heritage Site encompassing 155 sq km of montane forest, grasslands, and cloud forest. Named after the knuckle-like peaks visible from the Kandy valley, this rugged range harbours over 34 endemic species of flora and is home to the endangered horned lizard and rare fishing cat. Embark on a guided trekking adventure through the reserve's misty trails, ascending to viewpoints with sweeping panoramas across terraced valleys and jungle-draped ridges. Overnight stay in the Knuckles Range.

Day 6Knuckles Range to Sinharaja Rainforest

Depart for Sinharaja Biosphere Reserve in the south of the island — Sri Lanka's most celebrated and ecologically significant rainforest. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, Sinharaja is the island's last substantial area of primary lowland tropical rainforest and home to more than 50% of Sri Lanka's endemic species of mammals, butterflies, birds, and reptiles. After checking in, join your naturalist guide for an afternoon trek through the dense jungle interior, walking beneath a canopy of 45-metre-tall trees festooned with orchids and ferns. Watch for mixed-species bird flocks and listen for the haunting call of the Sri Lanka spurfowl. Overnight stay at Sinharaja.

Day 7Sinharaja Full Day & Transfer to Colombo

Rise early for a sunrise trek deep into the Sinharaja core zone with your naturalist guide — the early morning hours offer the best chance to observe endemic wildlife before the heat of the day. Spot green pit vipers coiled in the undergrowth, blue-tailed bee-eaters hawking insects, and — with luck — the elusive Sri Lanka leopard. After a picnic lunch at the forest edge, depart for Colombo. Arrive in the early evening, with time to enjoy a farewell dinner at a traditional Sri Lankan restaurant in the city. Overnight stay in Colombo.
