Caving Tour In Sri Lanka
Overview
Speleology is the scientific study and recreational exploration of caves. Sri Lanka has a remarkable history with caves — from prehistoric rock shelters and ancient Buddhist cave temples to Ramayana-linked caverns and rare limestone cave systems. This once-in-a-lifetime itinerary covers the island's most significant caves: mapping, photographing, and exploring hidden chambers that few visitors ever see.
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Batatotalena Cave
Airport arrival and transfer to Kuruwita. Visit Batatotalena Cave — located 85km from Colombo near Sudagala, this prehistoric rock shelter dates back over 25,000 years and served as a dwelling place through multiple historical eras. Archaeological excavations have uncovered skeletal remains, ancient cave drawings, and paintings. Buddhist literature identifies it as a sacred resting place of the Buddha on his journey to Sri Pada (Adam's Peak).
Day 2Belilena Cave
Visit Belilena Cave near Kitulgala — one of Sri Lanka's most important prehistoric archaeological sites, dating back approximately 37,000 years. Excavations here have revealed skeletal remains of anatomically modern humans, animal bones, and stone tools that shed crucial light on the prehistoric inhabitants of the island. The cave sits above a rocky stream in dense jungle and retains a powerful sense of ancient habitation.
Day 3Batadombalena Cave
Explore Batadombalena Cave — another of Sri Lanka's significant prehistoric rock shelters, associated with the ancient Balangoda Man (Homo sapiens balangodensis). The site has yielded arrow-straighteners, geometric microliths, and human remains from the Mesolithic period, providing a window into the lives of hunter-gatherers who inhabited the island's wet zone forests thousands of years ago.
Day 4Waulpane Cave
Transfer to Waulpane Cave in the Sabaragamuwa highlands — a remarkable cavern formed in ancient metamorphic rock, surrounded by dense jungle. The cave system features multiple chambers and natural skylights, with evidence of ancient habitation and Buddhist use. The surrounding forest walk to reach the cave is itself spectacular.
Day 5Mahalenama Cave
Travel to Mahalenama Cave — a cavern steeped in Ramayana mythology, believed to be one of the locations where King Ravana concealed Princess Sita after abducting her from Prince Rama of India. The cave sits in a dramatic rocky landscape and retains an atmosphere of legend and mystery. Explore with your guide and hear the stories woven into this ancient place.
Day 6Pannila Calcareous Cave
Visit the Pannila Calcareous Cave — one of the few true limestone cave formations in Sri Lanka, featuring stalactites, stalagmites, and rare cave-dwelling invertebrates. The cave requires a short jungle hike to reach and provides a fascinating contrast to the prehistoric rock shelters visited earlier in the tour. Pannila's geological formations are estimated to be several million years old.
Day 7Andirilena Cave
Explore Andirilena Cave — a remote cave complex in the central highlands, historically used as a meditation retreat by forest monks. The natural chambers and overhangs provided perfect shelter and seclusion, and inscriptions and offering platforms from the early centuries CE have been found here. The surrounding highland forest is rich in endemic birds and plants.
Day 8Ravana Ella Cave
Visit the famous Ravana Ella Cave above the spectacular Ravana Falls near Ella — the most well-known cave on the Ramayana trail in Sri Lanka. According to legend, this is where King Ravana held Princess Sita captive in his mountain kingdom. The cave is set in a dramatic cliff face above the roaring falls, and the surrounding landscape — wild, forested, and deeply atmospheric — brings the legend vividly to life.
Day 9Bogoda Ella Cave
Travel to Bogoda Ella Cave — an ancient rock shelter associated with a remarkable 16th-century wooden bridge nearby (one of Sri Lanka's oldest surviving timber structures). The cave complex features a small Buddhist shrine and evidence of use spanning over two millennia. The area around Bogoda is one of the least-visited and most atmospheric in the Badulla district.
Day 10Pahiyangala Ella Cave
Visit Pahiyangala — one of the largest cave systems in Sri Lanka, located in the Bulathsinhala hills. This prehistoric cavern is enormous in scale, with a cavernous main chamber that could house hundreds of people. Excavations have revealed human remains from the Mesolithic period alongside ancient pottery and ornaments. The site is both archaeologically significant and visually dramatic.
Day 11Sthripura Cave & Departure
Final morning visit to Sthripura Cave, located in the village of Kiriwanagama, 16km from Welimada. According to the Ramayana, this cave was used by King Ravana to conceal Princess Sita — who he had abducted after defeating Prince Rama. The cave retains an air of mythological significance and is still visited by Hindu pilgrims. Afternoon transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport for departure.
