Nature Trails Tour in Sri Lanka
Overview
Blue Lanka Tours' Nature Trails Tour selects some of the most rewarding nature experiences in Sri Lanka and packages them into an eight-day itinerary that is neither too long nor too short. Each location has been chosen for its distinct natural character — from Kithulgala's jungle rivers and Nuwara Eliya's cloud forest to Kandy's Hanthana mountain trails and the wildlife-rich forests around Udawattakele.
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Arrival in Negombo
Airport pickup and transfer to Negombo. A gentle first evening — walk along the beach promenade, visit the Dutch canal, and enjoy a fresh seafood dinner before the nature adventures begin tomorrow.
Day 2White Water Rafting in Kithulgala
Transfer to Kithulgala — the adventure capital of Sri Lanka. A full day of white water rafting on the grade 3-4 Kelani River rapids, with certified instructors and all safety equipment provided. The surrounding rainforest environment is spectacular, and endemic birds like the Sri Lanka blue magpie are frequently spotted from the water. Evening at the jungle lodge by the river.
Day 3Kithulgala to Nuwara Eliya — Nature's Bounty
Transfer to Nuwara Eliya through the tea-covered hills, stopping at the beautiful Ramboda Falls for photography. Arrive in the highlands and explore on foot: the Hakgala Botanical Garden, a working tea factory, and the shores of Gregory Lake. The highland air after Kithulgala's jungle heat is a wonderful contrast.
Day 4Nuwara Eliya — Horton Plains Trek
An early morning drive to Horton Plains for the World's End trek — 9km across a wind-swept montane plateau to a sheer 870m escarpment above the southern lowlands. Baker's Falls adds a beautiful waterfall to the morning's walk. Return to Nuwara Eliya for the afternoon and explore the Victorian-era remnants of this charming colonial hill station.
Day 5Transfer to Kandy — Tranquility
Drive to Kandy and spend the afternoon in tranquil exploration of Sri Lanka's cultural capital. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, walk the lake promenade, and enter the Udawattakele Forest Sanctuary — a remarkable urban forest reserve directly above the city, ideal for endemic birds and monkeys.
Day 6Hanthana Cycling Expedition
A full-day mountain cycling expedition through the Hanthana Mountain Range above Kandy. The trails wind through tea estates, patch forest, and village farmland with views over the Kandy basin and the central mountains. Routes range from beginner-friendly estate roads to more technical mountain singletrack for experienced cyclists.
Day 7Wildlife & Culture in Kandy
A final full day combining Kandy's natural and cultural highlights. Morning bird-watching walk in Udawattakele Forest with a specialist guide. Afternoon visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya — one of Asia's finest — and the historic Lankatilaka and Gadaladeniya Temples on the outskirts of the city.
Day 8Departure from Kandy
Morning at leisure in Kandy before your driver transfers you to Bandaranaike International Airport — a 3.5-hour drive through the hills and lowlands, giving you one final look at Sri Lanka's extraordinary landscape.
