Walking Tour Sri Lanka

9 Days / 8 Nights9 Days

Overview

Sri Lanka's hill country is one of Asia's most rewarding walking destinations — a landscape of dramatic elevation changes, cool highland air, roaring rivers, tea-carpeted ridges, and cloud-draped peaks. This 9-day walking tour is designed to take you through the island's finest trekking terrain in a progressive, well-paced itinerary that balances challenging mountain walks with gentler nature trails and cultural encounters. Starting on the coast in Negombo, the journey moves inland to the rainforest trails of Kitulgala on the Kelani River, before ascending to the base of Adam's Peak (Sri Pada, 2,243 m) for the iconic pre-dawn pilgrimage up 5,500 steps to the summit. The route continues through the rolling Koslanda highlands to Nuwara Eliya's tea estate trails, then north to Kandy and the dramatic ridgeline walks of the Knuckles Range above Rangala. Throughout, walks are led by experienced local guides who bring the landscape to life — identifying endemic birds, medicinal plants, and geological features that an unguided walk would miss entirely.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

Day 1Arrival in Negombo

Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Negombo — a historic Dutch colonial town on a narrow strip of land between the Indian Ocean and the Negombo Lagoon. In the late afternoon, take a gentle introductory walk along the seafront promenade and into the old town, visiting the 17th-century Dutch fort ruins, the impressive St. Mary's Church, and the colourful fish market on the lagoon waterfront. This easy coastal stroll is the perfect warm-up for the days ahead. Overnight stay in Negombo.

Day 2Negombo to Kitulgala — Rainforest Trails

Drive 3 hours east into the Sabaragamuwa highlands to Kitulgala, a small town on the Kelani River surrounded by lowland rainforest. After checking in, set out on an afternoon guided nature walk along the forest trails above the river, passing through dense jungle draped in epiphytes and tree ferns. Your guide will point out endemic birds — Kitulgala is famous as the premier birdwatching site in Sri Lanka, with all six endemic rainforest species present including the rare red-faced malkoha and ashy-headed laughingthrush. Walk: approximately 5 km, easy to moderate terrain. Overnight stay in Kitulgala.

Day 3Kitulgala to Adam's Peak — The Sacred Ascent

Transfer from Kitulgala to Dalhousie (Nallathanniya), the trailhead village at the base of Adam's Peak (Sri Pada, 2,243 m). Rest in the afternoon and eat a light dinner before a midnight departure for the ascent. The climb follows a well-maintained staircase of approximately 5,500 steps that winds through jungle, past rest houses serving hot ginger tea, and eventually emerges above the cloud line. Arrive at the summit before dawn to witness the extraordinary 'Shadow of the Peak' — a perfect triangular shadow cast by the mountain across the clouds below — and then the sunrise flooding the central highlands in golden light. The sacred footprint enshrined at the summit is venerated simultaneously by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians, making Adam's Peak one of the world's great interfaith pilgrimage sites. Descend after sunrise and return to your accommodation. Walk: approximately 7 km ascent (4–5 hours up, 3 hours down), moderate to strenuous. Overnight stay at Adam's Peak.

Day 4Adam's Peak to Koslanda — Waterfall Country

After a well-earned rest following the summit climb, drive southeast to Koslanda in the Badulla District — a quiet highland plateau at around 1,100 m, surrounded by dramatic escarpments and some of Sri Lanka's most impressive waterfalls. Afternoon guided walk to Dunhinda Falls (64 m) — known as the 'Bridal Veil of Sri Lanka' — through a jungle corridor of bamboo and tree ferns, with the thundering falls audible long before they come into view. Return via a secondary trail past paddy fields and small rural villages. Walk: approximately 4 km, easy. Overnight stay in Koslanda.

Day 5Koslanda to Nuwara Eliya — Tea Estate Walks

Drive west and north through the undulating Uva highlands to Nuwara Eliya (1,868 m) — Sri Lanka's highest city and the heart of its finest tea country. In the afternoon, take a guided walk through the estate fields surrounding the town, walking the narrow grassy paths between perfectly sculpted rows of tea bushes. Your guide explains the cultivation techniques, picking standards, and micro-climate effects that give Nuwara Eliya teas their celebrated delicate, floral character. Continue through Victoria Park — a beautifully maintained colonial-era botanical garden in the town centre — where migrant birds from the Himalayas shelter during the northern winter. Walk: approximately 6 km, easy. Overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya.

Day 6Nuwara Eliya to Kandy — Highland to Cultural Capital

Descend from Nuwara Eliya to Kandy on a scenic highland road via Ramboda Pass, stopping at Ramboda Falls (109 m) — one of the tallest waterfalls in Sri Lanka — for a short trail walk to the viewpoint. Arrive in Kandy in the afternoon. Spend the early evening on a guided walking tour of the Kandy City Centre: the Queen's Hotel terrace, the lakefront promenade, the colonial-era clock tower, and the Temple of the Tooth complex. Watch the evening puja ceremony at the temple as dusk settles over the lake. Walk: approximately 4 km city walk, easy. Overnight stay in Kandy.

Day 7Kandy to Rangala — Knuckles Ridgeline Trek

Drive north to Rangala, a remote tea estate village at the southern edge of the Knuckles Mountain Range. The Knuckles (Dumbara Hills) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of extraordinary biodiversity, with hiking trails that lead through montane forest, open patana grasslands, and across exposed ridgelines with vertiginous drops to valley floors below. Today's guided trek follows one of the range's classic ridge routes — ascending through shola forest, crossing grassy wind-swept saddles, and descending through streams and waterfalls with views on clear days as far as the Mahaweli River valley. Walk: approximately 10–12 km, moderate to strenuous. Overnight stay in Rangala.

Day 8Rangala to Negombo via Kotugoda

Spend the morning on a final gentle walk through the Rangala tea estate and surrounding forest before descending from the highlands. Drive west via Kotugoda — a rural coastal community near Negombo — where you can visit the local boat-building yards on the lagoon, watch traditional outrigger canoe fishermen preparing for evening, and enjoy a sunset stroll along the wide sandy beach as the fishing fleet heads out to sea. This quiet coastal send-off provides a meditative counterpoint to the exhilarating mountain walks of the previous days. Overnight stay in Negombo.
