Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Arrival in Kalpitiya
Welcome to Sri Lanka! Airport pickup and transfer to Kalpitiya on the north-western peninsula — a dramatic sandbar between the open ocean and the Puttalam Lagoon. Check in to your beachside lodge and rest after the journey. The evening brings a spectacular sunset over the lagoon and the first taste of Sri Lanka's extraordinary coastal landscapes.
Day 2Kalpitiya — Sand Dune 4WD
The off-road adventure begins with a 4WD cruise along the Kalpitiya peninsula's dramatic sand dunes — where the Indian Ocean crashes on one side and the vast Puttalam Lagoon stretches on the other. The narrow sand track between ocean and lagoon makes for an unforgettable drive. In the evening, explore the local attractions: the Dutch Fort, fishing harbour, and dolphin-watching waters of Bar Reef.
Day 3Kalpitiya to Habarana via Anuradhapura
Transfer to Habarana via the ancient sacred city of Anuradhapura — stopping to explore the sacred Bodhi Tree, colossal dagobas, and royal gardens of Sri Lanka's first great capital. In the evening at Habarana, a classic Sri Lankan village tour by open-top Landcruiser through paddy fields as the sun sets behind the jungle.
Day 4Habarana — Full Off-Road Day
An entire day of 4x4 adventure through Habarana's spectacular varied terrain: deep mud bogs, river crossings, rocky hill climbs, dense forest tracks, and open scrubland — a genuine off-road challenge that showcases Sri Lanka's incredible landscape. The day ends at a traditional 'kamatha' (threshing floor) with a sundowner as the light fades over the jungle.
Day 5Habarana to Gal Oya via Sigiriya
Morning ascent of Sigiriya Rock Fortress before transferring east to the remote Gal Oya National Park. Check in to your wilderness lodge at the edge of Sri Lanka's largest reservoir — the vast Senanayake Samudra — and enjoy a quiet evening in one of the country's most pristine and rarely visited landscapes.
Day 6Gal Oya — Vedda Walk & 4x4 Jungle Drive
Begin the day by meeting the local Vedda chief — a descendant of Sri Lanka's original indigenous people — for a walk through ancestral jungle lands, learning about traditional hunting methods, forest medicines, and oral history. A picnic lunch in the national park is followed by an afternoon 4x4 jungle drive through Gal Oya's dramatic interior terrain.
Day 7Gal Oya to Ella
Transfer to Ella through the spectacular southeastern highlands. Arrive in Ella and visit the iconic Nine Arch Bridge on foot before checking in to your guesthouse. An evening culinary experience at a local Ella restaurant — a long table, house-made arrack, and a feast of authentic Sri Lankan flavours.
Day 8Ella — Zip Line, ATV & Little Adam's Peak
A packed adventure day in Ella: morning hike to Little Adam's Peak for valley views, followed by Sri Lanka's fastest and longest zip-line adventure over the misty Ella Gap. In the afternoon, take an ATV Discovery session on four-wheel off-road bikes through tea estates and jungle tracks, finishing with air rifle and archery target sessions.
Day 9Ella to Belihuloya — Train & Tea Factory
Board the highland train from Ella to Haputale for a spectacular morning rail journey through tea-draped mountains. Visit a tea plantation and factory in the Haputale highlands. Transfer to Belihuloya — a remote village in a deep river valley below the Horton Plains plateau — and walk through the village to experience a simple and unhurried way of life.
Day 10Belihuloya — Devil's Staircase 4WD
Leave early for a dramatic full-day 4WD adventure from Belihuloya up the legendary Devil's Staircase — a series of hairpin-bend gravel tracks climbing the escarpment above the valley with extraordinary views. Continue the off-road drive through highland tea estates and cloud forest. BBQ dinner at the lodge by the Belihuloya River in the evening.
Day 11Belihuloya — Bambarakanda Falls & World's End Drive
Another early start for a spectacular drive: stop and photograph Bambarakanda Falls — at 263m the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, plunging from a sheer cliff face into the jungle below. Continue the dramatic 4WD drive up to World's End, approaching via the remote Satan's Steps track through cloud forest.
Day 12Belihuloya to Udawalawe via Waulpane Cave
Transfer to Udawalawe via the Kuragala forest temples and a stop at Duvili Ella waterfall. En route, explore the Waulpane Cave — a prehistoric rock shelter in a dramatic jungle setting. Arrive at your Udawalawe safari lodge and relax by the pool as elephants graze on the plain below.
Day 13Udawalawe — Double Safari Day
A dedicated elephant day in Udawalawe National Park: a morning jeep safari through the open grasslands and teak forest of the park, where over 500 wild elephants roam freely and are reliably encountered at close range. A traditional rice and curry lunch at a local restaurant, then a second afternoon safari to maximise elephant encounters and photograph the herds in the golden light.
Day 14Udawalawe to Colombo via Elephant Transit Home
Morning visit to the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home — a remarkable conservation project rehabilitating rescued wild elephant calves for eventual release. Watch the feeding sessions and learn about the programme before transferring to Colombo. Evening in the city for a final dinner and overnight stay.
Day 15Departure from Colombo
Transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport for your departure flight — 14 days of extraordinary off-road Sri Lanka, from coastal sand dunes to highland 4WD tracks and jungle river crossings.
