Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Arrival in Makandura
Upon arrival at BIA, your driver transfers you directly to the serene village of Makandura in the North Western Province — a landscape of ancient tanks, paddy fields, and quiet villages far from the tourist trail. Check in and enjoy an unhurried first evening in the countryside.
Day 2Makandura to Kurunegala — Elephant Freedom Project
Drive to Kurunegala, stopping at the Elephant Freedom Project — a remarkable sanctuary where rescued elephants are cared for in a humane, free-roam environment without chains or performances. Continue to the sacred Ridi Viharaya (Silver Temple) — one of Sri Lanka's most beautifully atmospheric ancient cave temples, rarely visited by foreigners.
Day 3Kurunegala — Ancient Forest Monasteries
Explore two of the most important yet rarely visited forest monasteries in Sri Lanka: Arankele Forest Monastery — a 2nd-century BCE meditation retreat in the jungle with stone walkways and contemplative bathing platforms — and Padeniya Raja Maha Viharaya, a beautifully ornate temple known for its extraordinary wooden pillars and detailed carvings.
Day 4Kurunegala to Kandy — Nalanda & Temple
Drive to Kandy via Nalanda Gedige — the geographic centre of Sri Lanka and a remarkable 8th-century fusion temple combining Buddhist and Hindu architectural elements with no parallel anywhere else on the island. Receive blessings at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy before checking in to your boutique eco-lodge.
Day 5Kandy — Knuckles Mountain Range
A full-day guided trek in the Knuckles Mountain Range — Sri Lanka's most biologically diverse mountain wilderness and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cloud forest trails pass through endemic plant communities, across mountain streams, and along ridges with views over five distinct peaks. Return to Kandy in the evening.
Day 6Mandaramnuwara — Leaf to Cup Tea Experience
Transfer to Mandaramnuwara — a remote highland village known for its outstanding organic tea. A 'leaf to cup' experience with a seasoned tea expert: walk the small-holder tea fields, hand-pluck the two leaves and a bud, and process the leaves through withering, rolling, fermenting, and drying to produce your own cup of fresh Ceylon tea. In the afternoon, trek to the cascading Thambadola Ella waterfall.
Day 7Mandaramnuwara to Nuwara Eliya via Lovers Leap
Transfer to Nuwara Eliya, stopping at the beautiful Lovers Leap Waterfall — a double cascade falling through highland jungle rarely mentioned in guidebooks. Arrive in Nuwara Eliya and explore the colonial town in the afternoon: the post office, Victoria Park, and Gregory Lake. The grand Langdale by Amaya hotel is your luxurious highland base for the night.
Day 8Nuwara Eliya to Koslanda — Train & Highland Hike
Begin with a hike to Single Tree Hills viewpoint above Nuwara Eliya for panoramic highland views. Board the scenic train from Nanu Oya to Haputale. Transfer to the remote Villa Le Maas Tota in Koslanda — a beautiful boutique property in a little-visited highland tea area, with extraordinary views over the Uva lowlands.
Day 9Koslanda — Rest & Villa Le Maas Tota
A restorative day at Villa Le Maas Tota, taking full advantage of this exceptional property and its setting. Options include walks on the tea estate, visits to nearby villages, or simply reading on the terrace with views over the valleys. The property's kitchen produces outstanding Sri Lankan food using ingredients grown on the surrounding estate.
Day 10Koslanda to Udawalawe — Buduruwagala
Drive south, stopping at the extraordinary Buduruwagala Buddhist Temple — a 9th-century rock face carved with seven colossal figures including a standing Mahayana Buddha with a flame headdress and the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara with a flame in the palm. Arrive at the Mahoora Tented Safari Camp — a luxury tented camp on the edge of Udawalawe National Park.
Day 11Udawalawe to Sinharaja — Hot Springs & Walawwa
Transfer to Sinharaja, stopping at the Madunagala Hot Water Springs — natural geothermal springs in a remote jungle setting rarely visited by tourists — and the historic Maduwanwela Walawwa, a beautifully preserved 18th-century Kandyan nobleman's manor house. Arrive at your Sinharaja forest lodge for the evening.
Day 12Sinharaja Rainforest Exploration
A full day in Sinharaja — Sri Lanka's most biodiverse forest and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Trek the main forest trail through ancient hardwoods and dense understorey, following the mixed-species bird flocks that move through the forest in the morning. The afternoon is free to explore the forest edges and streams around the lodge.
Day 13Sinharaja to Colombo — Morning Bird Walk
A final dawn bird-watching trail in Sinharaja before transferring to Colombo. Arrive in the afternoon and spend the evening exploring the city's highlights: Gangaramaya Temple, the National Museum, and a farewell dinner at one of Colombo's excellent restaurants.
Day 14Departure from Colombo
